The PDR Orthopedic Hospital, established in 1973 by Prof.Dr. P. Dhanarajan, is renowned for its specialization in orthopedic surgery. Originating from a humble background in Chinnapettai, Panruti, Tamil Nadu, Prof.Dr. Dhanarajan pursued his M.B.B.S. at Stanley Medical College in Chennai and furthered his education with an M.S. in Orthopedics from Madras Medical College (MMC). He began his medical career as an Assistant Professor at Royapettah Medical College and served for thirty years in various capacities within the government hospital system, including positions at Chengalpattu, ESI Aynavaram, and Kilpauk Medical College (KMC). His tenure culminated as the Chief of Orthopedics at Royapettah Government Hospital.
After three decades in the government hospital system, Prof.Dr. Dhanarajan was inspired to create his own institution. Motivated by a desire to offer high-quality, affordable orthopedic care, he established the PDR Orthopedic Hospital. Under his expert guidance, the hospital has emphasized innovative techniques and treatments, positioning itself at the forefront of orthopedic care. This facility represents his vision of providing advanced orthopedic treatments in a setting that is accessible to all, reflecting his deep commitment to enhancing patient well-being.
Continuing the Legacy
Prof. Dr. D. Gokulraj, the son of Prof. Dr. P. Dhanarajan, has decided to carry forward his father’s legacy at PDR Orthopedic Hospital. Dr. Gokulraj spent 30 years at Sri Ramachandra Medical College (SRMC), starting as an Associate Professor under the legendary Prof. Dr. SSK Marthandam. He progressed to the roles of Assistant Professor and finally Professor. After SRMC, Dr. Gokulraj headed the Orthopedic Department at Fortis Vadapalani before joining PDR Orthopedic Hospital full time.
Dr. Gokulraj received advanced training in Germany for trauma and joint replacement surgeries and completed a fellowship in arthroplasty in the USA. With over 3000 knee replacement surgeries to his credit, Dr. Gokulraj brings unparalleled expertise to our hospital. He is one of the very few surgeons specializing in kinematic surgeries in Chennai, a technique that ensures precise alignment and better functional outcomes for patients.
Unique Mentorship and Expertise
Dr. Gokulraj’s unique experience of being mentored by two legendary orthopedic surgeons in India has profoundly shaped his career. Under the guidance of his father, Prof. Dr. Dhanarajan, he was exposed to innovative surgical approaches that prioritize patient well-being and minimally invasive techniques. Prof. Dr. Dhanarajan’s hands-on mentorship provided Dr. Gokulraj with a solid foundation in practical, patient-focused care.
At the same time, being mentored by his father-in-law Prof. Dr. S.S.K. Marthandam at SRMC offered Dr. Gokulraj a unique perspective on research-oriented, futuristic diagnostic and surgical techniques. Dr. Marthandam’s emphasis on integrating cutting-edge research with clinical practice helped Dr. Gokulraj develop a comprehensive approach to orthopedic care that blends innovative treatments with evidence-based practices.
This combination of mentorship from two of the most respected figures in orthopedic surgery has made Dr. Gokulraj an extremely efficient surgeon and an excellent clinician. His dual exposure to Prof. Dr. Dhanarajan’s unique surgical techniques and Prof. Dr. Marthandam’s research-driven methodologies ensures that Dr. Gokulraj brings a well-rounded, holistic approach to patient care. About Prof. Dr. S.S.K. Marthandam
Dr. S.S.K. Marthandam, an eminent orthopedic surgeon and former Vice Chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University, also served as Chairman and Director of the Orthopedic Care Centre at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre. He began his career at a small public health centre in Tirunelveli district and later worked at the Government General Hospital and Royapettah Government Hospital in Chennai before joining Sri Ramachandra University.
Dr. Marthandam was the orthopedic consultant to several Chief Ministers and other prominent politicians in Tamil Nadu.
He is renowned for pioneering techniques and therapies in orthopedic treatment, particularly advancing cell-based therapeutics for arthritis. His groundbreaking work on the culture of human chondrocytes in a novel TGP scaffold has enabled successful transplantation of stable cartilage tissues, benefiting thousands of arthritis patients. Dr. Marthandam, who was also Dr. Gokulraj’s father-in-law, continues to inspire advancements in the field, helping patients overcome chronic orthopedic conditions.
